North Mid plants the seeds for Edible greens
North Mid launches its Pantry Plant Box in partnership with Edible London- a sustainable food box subscription service to help reduce food waste.
The Pantry Plant Box service will operate as a membership scheme model, based on a financial contribution from staff, which is donated to North Mid Charity. In exchange, they will receive a food box containing fresh produce and non-perishable items sourced from Edible London. The scheme is being supported by North Mid suppliers ByNorth Ltd, Bouygues and Bouygues Energies & Services who have pledged to subsidise the cost of the boxes for the first wave of delivery.
The plant boxes are sourced from surplus produce, with some mixed ambient items which are donated and produced (when available) from Edible London’s growing projects. All plant boxes will be plant based and do not require refrigeration and there will be an element of ‘swappable’ items to support cultural preferences and dietary requirements.
Helen Saunders, Interim Chief of Staff at North Mid said: “It’s a real pleasure to work in partnership with Edible London who share our aims of supporting communities and reducing waste. It’s fantastic to see the good feedback from the first staff to use the service and I look forward seeing how the project grows.”
This is the latest project in an established partnership which North Mid have with Edible London to care for our allotment and green spaces. They also work locally to grow fresh produce to ensure local communities which is distributed for free to the community via their food bank. By growing locally, this reduces the journey the food takes to reach our community and helps reduce our carbon footprint.
Metin Ali, from Edible London said:
“It’s been an honour to work with North Mid on both the staff allotment growing project and our new Pantry Plant Box scheme. The aim is to support NHS staff, eliminate food waste, raise awareness and help Edible London continue its work in the wider community to eradicate food poverty- ensuring everyone has equitable access to food security. The feedback from the launch has been phenomenal!”
