Shaping our hospital’s future
It is an exciting time to be living in Enfield and Haringey. Both boroughs have seen investment in regeneration over the last few years: in green spaces, in cycle highways and in a world class football stadium. That investment is set to continue, particularly with new major housing developments at Tottenham Hale and Meridian Water.
This could see the population North Mid serves increase by up to 50,000 people over the next 15 years. The people in Enfield and Haringey are also likely to be older and frailer than is currently reflected in our local population.
With this in mind, it’s important to look ahead. By looking at the changing demographics in the local population in years to come, it will help inform how the hospital could deliver services differently over the next 10 years - this is particularly important now in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
A hospital site fit for the future
As a hospital anchored in its community, North Mid has an important role to play in the community’s regeneration. That starts with looking at the land the hospital sits on. Currently, there are areas of its estate not used to its full potential, so teams at North Mid have set out to explore how the Trust can work with partners such as the Greater London Authority to see how it can cater to needs of local people not just now, but in years to come. The aims are firstly to improve healthcare provision for people and secondly how it can support improving local amenities in particular housing.
Work has been underway for over a year to incorporate staff and stakeholder views about what the hospital site needs to look like so that it is fit for the future. The ideas aim to transform the local area into a vibrant, modern and greener environment with new housing, a multistorey car park, and other facilities that will complement the state of the art buildings that the hospital currently has.
North Mid’s vision will always be to provide outstanding care for our local people, while working with partners where partnership demonstrates better outcomes for patients, and also keeping people healthy. Not only will the provisional plans for regeneration help North Mid meet the healthcare needs of the people of Enfield, Haringey and beyond, but also put something back into the community around improved housing, employment opportunities, and supporting local businesses.
