Team North Mid, let's fight antimicrobial resistance together!

Written by Dr Cecilia Drapeau, consultant microbiologist and  Semra Ali, lead antimicrobial pharmacist.

From Friday 18 to Thursday 24 November 2022, North Mid is marking World Antimicrobial Awareness Week .

Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health concern. It threatens the very fabric of our society. We need teamwork, enthusiasm, and commitment to face the challenges of this silent pandemic.

In occasion of this year's WAAW, we would like to raise awareness by highlighting the importance of our valuable junior doctors-not infection experts- in proactively contributing and supporting antimicrobial stewardship within the Trust.

Not only we are grateful for their contribution to work with the senior Microbiology team members at NMUH, in conducting AMS ward rounds, and providing education and training, but we believe they are the perfect example of antimicrobial champions.

Our junior’s important messages for healthcare professionals on antimicrobial stewardship:

  • Dr Yasmin Sara Lahrach (locum SHO): “Please check our NMUH guidelines before prescribing antibiotics.”
  • Nishita Patel (junior antimicrobial pharmacist): "Please ensure you are prescribing the correct dose for your antibiotics."
  • Dr Alexander Screawn (Trust SHO): “Please review antibiotic treatment within 48-72 hours, and daily thereafter.”
  • Dr Jessica Galvin (Microbiology SHO): “Please consider iv to po switch, whenever possible.”
  • Dr Thomas Sammut (ST3 Infectious Diseases): “Start Smart and then Focus. Get evidence for your source of infection.”

Dr Sammut will be introducing Antimicrobial Stewardship teaching to our F1 and F2 doctors in the Lecture Theatre on Wednesday 23 November 2022.

Please feel free to download our A4 poster and display this in your staff areas to raise awareness of the week and encourage more colleagues to become antimicrobial champions.

Team North Mid, we need your help. Let's fight antimicrobial resistance together!
