Joanne Johnson - Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship
During National Apprenticeship Week 2022 (7-13 February) we will be featuring some of our current apprentices who work across the Trust in different areas and doing apprenticeships at different levels in a wide range of areas. Hearing their stories and how their skills, knowledge and confidence has increased, we will see how apprenticeships are being used within the NHS to upskill staff and ensure they are future-proof and future-ready.

Tell us about yourself?
My name is Joanne Johnson and I started my apprenticeship of Level 3 Team Leader Course with Hawk Training in late 2019. I was newly appointed to my current role of A&E Admin Manager and I had very little management skills and experience under my belt.
Enrolling with Hawk Training was the best decision I have made and has assisted me in gaining the knowledge, tools, direction and experience needed to be a good leader.
What would you say is the main benefit of doing an apprenticeship?
The Hawk Courses are developed to work around you and are fully funded by the Trust. You can work and learn at your own pace. All coursework, workshops and lectures are online and you can access the learning hub at any time.
The first two to three months were the hardest - I felt like quitting but the tutors are very helpful and supportive and gave me the inspiration to continue. They worked with me providing support for my individual style of learning.
What qualities or skills has the apprenticeship brought out in you?
The course has been a turning point in my career. I had to overcome many of the gremlins and developed a new mindset.
It has restored my confidence and encouraged me to push myself to explore and develop. I have received full support and encouragement from my line manager along the way and can always ask for direction from the Trust’s Apprentice Programme Co-ordinators.
The theme for this year is “Build the Future”, what would you say to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship?
As a mature student, I feel you are really never too old to learn. If you are thinking of just learning something new, want to brush up on your education or just dreaming of a new career, I recommend you take that step in placing the first brick in building your future.
