North Mid consultant nurse co-authors and launches updated RCN Competency Framework for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia nursing care

North Mid’s Sekayi Tangayi has been celebrated for her pivotal role in advancing haematology nursing care, co-authoring and presenting the updated Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Competency Framework for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia nursing care at a prestigious national event.

sek1On Tuesday 19 November, Sekayi Tangayi, a consultant nurse at North Mid, alongside Natasha Lewis, consultant nurse at Homerton University Hospital, proudly launched the RCN Competency Framework for Nursing Staff Caring for People with Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia Syndromes: 2nd Edition (2024). As co-authors of this much-anticipated document, they presented it at the UK Forum for Haemoglobin Disorders to an audience of haematology professionals.sek3

The updated framework reflects modern, evidence-based practices and introduces RCN Levels of Nursing—Enhanced, Advanced, and Consultant Nurse. It provides a valuable tool for benchmarking performance, supporting peer reviews, and enhancing nurse education, ensuring consistent, high-quality care for patients with sickle cell and thalassaemia syndromes.sek2

As one of the co-authors, Sekayi has made a significant impact on improving nursing practice and patient outcomes in the field of haemoglobinopathies, groups of disorders in which there is abnormal production or structure of the haemoglobin molecule. Her dedication exemplifies a commitment to accessible, equitable, and excellent healthcare.

Sekayi expressed her heartfelt thanks to the contributors, including Gill Coverdale, RCN director of education, the Sickle Cell Society, the UK Thalassaemia Society, and Dr Lola Oni, the UK's first consultant nurse for sickle cell patients, who attended the event in person. She also extended her gratitude to all the nursing staff who participated in the launch.
