NHS Staff Survey results reveal North Mid as ‘most improved’ Trust

North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust has been awarded most improved trust, according the latest NHS Staff Survey results published yesterday.

The national staff survey was conducted between October and November 2023, and provides a key snapshot of the experiences of staff working within the NHS. North Mid was one of 67 Trusts to choose independent survey provider, Picker, to conduct the survey and it reveals that North Mid saw the most progress across the questions asked compared to the other trusts who use Picker.

North Mid also saw a record-equalling level of feedback, with 62% of staff sharing their experiences of working at the Trust. They recognised the progress made over the last year, including:

  • The roll out of the Scope for Growth initiative, helping make sure appraisals are meaningful conversations for staff to develop their skills and careers.
  • Improvements in reporting culture so that staff can feel confident that the Trust will take action when they speak up, and
  • A refined our reward and recognition schemes so that more staff are acknowledged for their excellent work.

The results highlighted key areas of focus over the coming year, and will use the Patient First Management System (the Trust’s approach to deliver its strategy), to deliver these. This includes making sure staff have access to more training and development opportunities and reduce the number of instances that staff are subjected to bullying or abuse.

Matthew Baker, director of human resources and organisational development at North Mid, said:

“I am incredibly grateful to staff who took the time to share their experiences of working at North Mid. To see nearly two thirds of staff engage with the staff survey is really encouraging, and demonstrates just how much staff value the opportunity to share what it’s like to work at North Mid, and what more could be done to make it an even better place to work.

“The last year has been incredibly challenging for staff across the NHS, and it is really encouraging that our staff have recognised the meaningful progress we have made at North Mid despite these challenges. Out of all the Trusts surveyed by Picker, an independent survey company, we are the most improved. This is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates that the efforts we have made to improve staff experience is working, including making our annual appraisals more meaningful for staff to develop their skills and careers, improving our reporting culture and refining our reward and recognition schemes.”

“We know we have much more to do to make sure every person working at North Mid can thrive, and we are confident that the feedback in this survey will help us make meaningful change in the year to come.”
